IBAN (International Bank Account Number)

IBAN is an alphanumeric code used in transactions between bank accounts within the SEPA area. It is composed of:

  • 2 letters that identify the country (based on the international standard ISO 3166);
  • 2 check digits;
  • the national Basic Bank Account Number (BBAN) code, which varies in length depending on the country.

IBAN can be used for both national and international transactions.

IBAN in the UK

In the United Kingdom, the IBAN is made up of the following elements: country code (2 letters) "GB", 2 check digits, 4 digits of the bank code, 6 digits of the sort code, and 8 digits of the bank account number. In the UK, IBAN is always 22 characters long.
